Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2020
Perhaps the first portrayal of hockey on the Hollywood big screen, Idol of the Crowds, initially released late in the summer of 1937, starred a young John Wayne along with love interest Sheila Bromley. Convinced to leave his chicken farm for the Big Apple and the world of professional hockey, Wayne suits up for the New York Panthers to help lead the team to the championship, only to run afoul of crooked gamblers and the tempting siren associated with them. Issued for the film’s re-release in 1948, we have an especially attractive Idol of the Crowds insert movie poster. At the standard size of 14” x 36” and affixed to a linen backing with full dimensions of approx 16” x 38”, enticing graphics are featured, with Wayne depicted in full equipment ready for game action, with wonderful vignettes added from the film.
Displaying beautifully, there are a few creases visible, with just light overall wear including some minor toning.
