Challenging the supremacy of the NHL, the World Hockey Association was founded in 1971, with 12 teams taking part in the inaugural season of 1972-73. The Winnipeg Jets would serve as the league’s most successful club, winning a trio of Avco Cup championships. This lot offers a collection of approx 175 team-issued black and white WHA photos. Included, we have 50 Minnesota Fighting Saints photos, with 36 in the 8” x 10” range (two are signed with Hampson and Antonovich) and 12 in the approx 5” x 7” range, 8 New York Golden Blades photos including Harry Howell, 26 New England Whalers photos from 1973-74 with the original envelope, an additional 14 Whalers photos, 16 Houston Aeros photos including John Tonelli, 15 Winnipeg Jets photos including Anders Hedberg, 18 Quebec Nordiques photos including Rejean Houle and J.C. Tremblay, 3 Edmonton Oilers photos including Glen Sather, 6 Cincinnati Stingers photos, 3 Phoenix Roadrunners photos, 3 Toronto Toros photos, 5 Calgary Cowboys photos and 8 Philadelphia Blazers photos. The majority of the photos display well with light handling wear as well as the odd corner ding, crease or blemish, with many having the players name handwritten.
