Great story here for Wayne Gretzky’s 1982-83 Edmonton Oilers game jersey. Our consignor signed Wayne to his first endorsement contract with Nike, for whom he worked most of his career. As a result of that relationship, Nike agreed to supply the Oilers with footwear, workout gear and clothing, and supplied the team’s jerseys for a few seasons. Wayne gifted his 1982-83 game jersey to our consignor at the end of the season. Our consignor recalls that the jerseys were handmade and that Nike, which did not make jerseys for any other NHL teams, would supply the Oilers with 45 home and 45 away jerseys per season. He believes that this blue mesh game jersey was Wayne’s backup. Size L flag tag sits in the back of the neck and the desirable Universiade ’83 patch is sewn on the right shoulder. The screened white vinyl Nike logo is on the right rear tail. That would be subsequently moved to the left rear tail because Gretzky tucked his jersey into his pants on the right side. Comes with an LOA for the jersey signed by the consignor stating that he received it directly from Wayne Gretzky.
