Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2021
The biggest star to ever grace the WHA despite only seeing action in 80 regular-season games split between two clubs, Wayne Gretzky first signed with the Indianapolis Racers in June of 1978 and skated in just 8 games for the team before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers. Originating from Gus Badali, a hockey agent who represented Gretzky early in his career, this Northland Registered Pattern model used in the 1978-79 WHA season sports “99” handwritten to the upper shaft along with “Gretzky” stamped to both sides, with the original white but now darkened tape over the handle, with the blade untaped as used originally. “Gretzky” is also handwritten in pencil on the top side of the shaft, with this done at the factory when the stick was first produced, with a production code of "425024" stamped to the underside. Wayne has signed the lower front side shaft in pencil, with the somewhat faded signature joined by the inscription of “To Gus, best of luck”. Seeing use in the competent hands of the all-time greatest during the genesis of his unrivaled pro career, an LOA from Shawn Chaulk will accompany this historic lumber, along with a COR from MeiGray.
Regarding condition, the paramount stick exhibits nice game-use, with dark marks visible to both the front and reverse sides of the blade, with additional specimens present on the lower shaft. There is a minor water stain to the shaft along with small traces of red paint transfer, with the underside of the blade quite rough, with off-ice use at some point possible.
