Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
A Memorial Cup champion with the Toronto Marlboros in 1964, Wayne Carleton would suit up for a collective total of 568 games in the National Hockey League and World Hockey Association and would find himself on the ice as a member of the Boston Bruins when his teammate Bobby Orr scored his famous Cup-clinching goal in the fourth game of the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals against the St. Louis Blues. Offered here, we present this stick used by Carleton during the 1969-70 campaign that has been signed by 20 members of that year's Stanley Cup champion Bruins. A Sher-Wood model with "Carleton" penned to the upper shaft in black marker ink that has faded over the years, Carleton's number "11" is stamped in red above his name and is largely faded as well. Retaining its original tape job of black over the handle/knob and blade, the stick shows evidence of game-use through stick and puck marks over both sides of the blade and throughout the lower shaft. Displaying additional wear through a few nicks and abrasions throughout the length of the shaft as well, the accent stickers remain intact and accounted for while the bottom of the blade and the toe remain in excellent shape and show just light wear. Remaining structurally sound with no cracks or breaks, twenty (20) members of that Cup winning squad have signed the forehand side of the shaft including HOFers Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Johnny Bucyk and Gerry Cheevers as well as other notables including Carleton, McKenzie, Smith, Stanfield, Westfall, Lorentz, Awrey, Marcotte, Johnston, Doak, Speer, Lesuk and others such as Derek Sanderson who has simply signed the stick with "Turk". All having signed in black marker, the signatures are clearly legible and remain bold though do display with expected lightening from age. A superb piece for any Stanley Cup/Bruins shrine, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
