Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Exciting the Maple Leaf Gardens hopefuls with a second place finish at the conclusion of the 1961-62 NHL season, the Toronto Maple Leafs would be led by the scoring prowess of Frank Mahovlich, with Johnny Bower securing an impressive 31 wins. The New York Rangers and defending champion Chicago Black Hawks would each be dealt with in 6 post-season games allowing the Leafs to claim their first of three consecutive championships. This lot offers a desirable collection of 11 postcards signed by the 1961-62 Leafs including 7 HOF members, highlighted by a gorgeous Tim Horton specimen. At the standard 3 ½” x 5 ½”, each blank-backed postcard has the respective players name and position along the base, with the majority signed in blue ballpoint. Included with Horton are postcards signed by HOFers Stanley, Pulford, Mahovlich, Keon, Kelly (with personalization) and Johnny Bower, along with Shack, Nevin, Hillman and Billy Harris.
As mentioned, the Horton is absolutely gorgeous, and remains perfectly bold and dark with no issues whatsoever. The card itself shows just very light wear to the corners. The remaining signatures display beautifully, with just the Shack and Hillman light, with the postcards themselves showing light to moderate handling wear with lower technical grades, with the Hillman, Bower and Mahovlich only showing very light wear.
