Employing a helmet after losing a piece of an ear from an errant shot in 1967, Stan Mikita is well remembered for the heavily curved sticks he and teammate Bobby Hull began using in the mid-1960s. Seen as an advantage to the shooter, the league limited curvature to a ½” in 1970, with this rule applauded by netminders. We have a signed stick used by Mikita in the early-1970s. A Northland Custom Pro model, “Mikita” appears over the upper shaft, with stamps on either side from supplier Gunzo’s. With the original black tape over the blade and white cloth over the shaved handle, the striping accents remain fairly intact, with a factory code of “1197” placed along the underside. Mikita has signed over the upper shaft in black marker adding his number, with PSA/DNA giving their approval, with a sticker numbered “AD30048” affixed over the lower shaft and with their COA also included.
The stick exhibits heavy use, with numerous puck marks over both sides of the blade and lower shaft, with a pair of small age cracks at the toe. There’s additional marks and wear to the shaft, with a few heavy streaks of red paint transfer. Despite the heavy wear, the stick remains completely solid and ready for display.
