Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Totaling 3, these particular pucks were all used to score goals for the St. Louis Blues during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 NHL seasons. We have the puck used to score the Blues 41st goal of the season by Wayne Merrick on Nov 15th 1973, the 73rd goal of the season by Mike Murphy on Dec 14th 1972 (assisted by Frank St. Marseille & Bob Plager) and the 141st goal of the season, scored by Chris Evans on Feb 5th 1974 (assisted by Gary Unger & Glen Sather).
Regarding condition, the rubberized Blues logo on the Merrick puck has a few dark spots with general discolouration, while the Goal Puck Program label exhibits a number of dark marks with toning. The rubberized Flyers logo on the Murphy puck has some light crazing and toning, with a few tiny red marks, with the Goal Puck Program label discoloured, with the label torn in spots. Lastly, the rubberized Blues logo on the Evans puck has dark marks along with residue left from a former attached sticker, with the Goal Puck Program label exhibiting a slightly dark surface with marks.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-1973 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
