Beginning his HOF career with a single season in the WHA with Birmingham, Rod Langway was drafted by Montreal in 1977 and won a Stanley Cup championship with the Habs in 1979. An All-Star in six consecutive seasons starting in 1981, Langway also secured a pair of James Norris Trophies, and was just the fifth player in history to win the award consecutively. From his fourth and final season in Quebec, we have a photo-matched Canadiens jersey worn by the stalwart blueliner in 1981-82, with this example showing a ton of game-use! A label with “52” sizing is affixed to the collar, with an embroidered Maska logo to the reverse hem. Featuring the classic Canadiens team crest in layered tackle twill, “17” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in white-over-blue twill, with “Langway” in white across the attached original red nameplate. The jersey also has a garter-style fight strap. As mentioned, the jersey sports heavy game-wear guaranteeing lengthy use, with marks to the team crest and fraying to the threading, with additional marks, material pulls, scrapes and paint transfer to the sleeves. Team repairs are also abundant, with examples/clumps situated over the front (25), reverse (7), shoulders (2) and sleeves (too many to count, with dozens of repairs and clumps of repairs to each). Getty Image #462469054 (March 6, 1982) has been matched to the washed-out black mark on the left shoulder to the right of the team repair, and we should also note that a number of other images from the 1981-82 season show the correct team crest and number placement, correct nameplate length and placement, and unrepaired holes (which are repaired on the jersey).
