Building a powerhouse franchise throughout the 1970s, the New York Islanders were founded in 1972 as a means to keep the WHA out of the newly built Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Isles would be successful early on, advancing to the semifinals in three of their first five seasons before dominating the NHL with their four-consecutive Stanley Cup championships beginning in 1980. This lot contains a great Islanders postcard and team card collection of approx 548, ranging from 1979-80, to 2001-02, with 52 examples signed. The breakdown for the items in the group is as follows. 1979-80 – 20 transparent postcards including Bossy, Smith, Trottier, Potvin and others, early-1980s - 66 team cards including 18 signed with Bossy (2 different, 1 signed), Lafontaine (signed), Tonelli (3 different, 2 signed), Flatley (signed) and others, early-1980s – 15 postcards including Bossy, Nystrom, Smith, Gillies and others (glue residue), 1983-84 – 20 black and white team cards, 1984-85 – 13 “Islanders News” postcards, 1985-86 – 40 team cards including 13 signed with Trottier (signed), Lafontaine (signed) and others, 1989-90 – 29 team cards, 1990-91 – 26 team cards, 1991-92 - 24 team cards, 1995-96 – 170 team cards (heavy duplication), 1996-97 – 27 team cards, 1997-98 – 1 team card, 1998-99 – 17 AM620 Radio team cards, 1999-00 – 37 AM620 Radio team cards including 21 signed, 2000-01 – 21 team cards, 2001-02 – 22 team cards. There is also an additional approx 45 items with many signed including from Smith, Westfall, Persson, Parise, Merrick, Hart, Marshall, Nystrom, Resch (3), Howatt (2), Kaszycki, Harris (2), Desjardins (2), Price, Fortier, Bourne, Loiselle, Morrow, D. Potvin (3), J. Potvin and others. The majority of the photos/cards in the collection remain in beautiful condition with just very light handling wear.
