Bill Durnan, Maurice Richard and coach Dick Irvin are among the six deceased HOFers whose signatures appear on this 1949-50 Montreal Canadiens team-signed stick with a dedicated Emile “Butch” Bouchard autograph. Ken Reardon and Doug Harvey have also signed along with Elmer Lach, who makes it a total of seven HOF autographs among the 19 Habs pencil signatures along the shaft of this vintage wood stick with “McNiece’s” stamped on one side of the blade.
Reay, Dussault, Gravelle, Mosdell, Riopelle, Harmon, MacKay, Curry, Leger, Warwick, Plamondon and Fillion are the others who have signed. The Lach autograph low on the shaft between Durnan and Curry is fainter but clearly legible. Bouchard’s pencil signature and dedication are on the heel and front of the blade, which is chipped on the bottom edge of the heel. The first word of the dedication, “Pour”, was written in red ink and then Bouchard wrote over it and continued in pencil, which appears doubled in spots from the way the lead was sharpened. Bouchard’s dedicated signature in French reads, “Pour Henri Thibeault, Bonne chance et prompt retablissement, Emile “Butch” Bouchard”. The butt end of the stick has a few chips and is blackened.
