With his legendary career immortalized and his memory living-on through the prestigious trophy named in his honour - presented annually to the leading goal scorer in the NHL, Maurice Richard was the first player in history to reach the 50-goal total in a single season, and was the all-time NHL goal leader upon his retirement. The iconic superstar not only thrilled Montreal Forum supporters for almost two decades, the Rocket would also feature prominently in the NHL’s best-on-best showcase, making All-Star Game appearances in fourteen CONSECUTIVE seasons from 1945 to 1957, which included eight First Team All-Star selections. The 1950 All-Star Game featured Richard with teammates Butch Bouchard and Glen Harmon headlining an NHL “All-Stars” team that took on current Stanley Cup-champions Terry Sawchuk and Gordie Howe, in the form of the Detroit Red Wings at the famous Olympia in Motor City.
Coveted not just for their attractive design and aesthetically pleasing features, NHL All-Star Game sweaters signify the very best the sport has to offer, with each and every player receiving selection truly honoured. From his sixth appearance at the momentous spectacle, we have the very sweater worn by the timeless legend at the 1950 NHL All-Star Game. The wondrous wool creation includes "McNiece's Sports Montreal" tagging sewn inside the right front hem, with the paramount garment measuring-out to roughly a modern size 48. Featuring an especially thick red and white felt NHL shield crest with “1950”, the Rocket’s trademark “9” appears over the verso in royal blue over white felt, with single rows of five affixed white felt stars arching over the upper front and reverse. Presenting marvelously, retaining bold and vibrant colouration and with the material remaining supple throughout, a few small and minor stains are visible over the affixed felt stars on the upper front, with a few small holes present over the lower left sleeve. Additional small holes are also visible on the front left shoulder, upper right sleeve and along the lower right seam. Originally produced for utilitarian use by arguably the greatest Montreal Canadien in history, this priceless surviving relic now serves as one of the hobby’s undisputedly finest wool specimens. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
