Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
First witnessing the sport of hockey along with his family at Montreal's famous Winter Carnival in 1889, Lord Stanley of Preston was instantly enamoured, with the Montreal Gazette stating that he "expressed his great delight with the game of hockey and the expertise of the players". With a pair of sons soon competing in the burgeoning game, Stanley commissioned the “Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" in 1892 to be awarded to the ‘top amateur hockey team in Canada’. We have an exceedingly rare handwritten letter from 1878 that has been signed by Lord Stanley. A fold-over affair with handwritten fountain pen text on all four sides, at just under 7 1/4" x 9" when open, there is an embossed treasury seal on the first page along with the date of "March 31, 78" and "Confidential". Signed with his "Fred Stanley" signature at the bottom of the concluded text, the gorgeous stylistic penning presents majestically. This historic piece will interest many, as Lord Stanley's John Hancock is the centerpiece within every Hall of Fame autograph collection.
