Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
A veteran of the Canadian Army serving during the Second World War, Johnny Bower spent considerable time in the AHL before ascending to the world’s best league, later tending the net of the Toronto Maple Leafs for parts of a dozen NHL seasons. We have a stick used by the HOFer during the mid-to-late-1960s with the blue and white. A CCM Pattern Made Custom Pro model, “Bower” is stamped to the upper shaft, with “Bonded Fibreglass” over the topside of the shaft. There is also a stamp from team supplier Browns Sports. The original tape remains in place over the paddle, blade and knob, with the striping accent over the handle intact. The stick is in gorgeous condition and was used briefly and shows just very light game-use including a bit of wear at the heal apex and a few marks to the paddle. Bower later added a blue ink signature to the shaft along with "HOF 76". "Bower" is also handwritten in pencil near the top of the shaft. This is one of the nicer sticks we have ever handled from "The China Wall".
Great use is exhibited, with wear to the paddle and underside of the blade, with cracking at the heel section and at the tip of the blade. Heavy red goal-post paint transfer is also visible, with a signature from Jim Pappin over the upper shaft.
