Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club's comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
Historically significant as the first captain, coach, and general manager of the Montreal Canadiens in 1909, Jack Laviolette was the first francophone superstar, and tasked with building the Habs, Laviolette signed legendary stars Newsy Lalonde, Georges Vezina and Didier Pitre. The loss of his right foot to an automobile accident in 1918 ended his playing career, with HOF enshrinement occurring in 1963. Originally displayed at the hallowed Montreal Forum and most likely later at the Bell Centre, we have a framed painting of Jack Laviolette by noted Habs artist Michel Lapensee. At approx 11” x 15” and executed in water colours, Laviolette is wonderfully portrayed, with his name and tenure listed on the matte. The artist has signed, adding the date (1992), with the work double-matted and framed to approx 19” x 23”. The unique painting is flawless, with light wear to the frame. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
