Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
With his important status cemented within the rich pantheon of hockey history due to his regular donning of facial protection, we have an absolutely wonderful collection of 120+ historic Jacques Plante images including over 50 original prints and media examples. Highlights include a number of action shots along with a small pre-NHL image from 1948, a media photo from 1958 that shows an injured Plante with doctors fearing both a brain concussion and spinal injury, a 1958 media photo showing Plante wearing the mask he wore for practices along with a number of original 1959/60 photos that feature Jacques with his early masks. We even have a small colour image of Jacques with what appears to be his wife at their home. A few framed examples are also present, along with a limited-edition Plante litho from 1992 and a binder full of Plante scrapbook clippings.
The framed photos include a pair of 6” x 8” examples (no glass) along with a second pair in just under the 9” x 11” range. The bulk of the photos are roughly 8” x 10” with some smaller, with expected wear and handling commensurate with their former use, with most of the media examples exhibiting notations along with affixed captions. Early photos documenting the history of Plante during the formative years that he revolutionized the game with his mask are highly sought after, with an impressive selection within this abundant collection.
