The Atlanta Thrashers franchise record holder for most goals in a single season with 52, Ilya Kovalchuk spent almost a decade with the club, with the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy won during his third season in 2003-04. This lot includes a signed helmet worn by the superstar during his sophomore campaign in 2002-03, accompanied by a stick used circa 2003-04 and a signed Thrashers jersey. The helmet is a Nike model in solid black with intact Xcel visor, chin strap and interior padding, with a “17” decal over the lower reverse along with Aves decals gracing each side. There is also an NHL decal over the right reverse. Kovalchuk used Nike model helmets his first two seasons, in 2001-02 and 2002-03, with the Thrashers decals present first seeing use in 2002-03. Imagery shows Kovalchuk using an Xcel visor during his rookie season of 2001-02, with this likely recycled for use in 2002-03. Hailing from the personal collection of an important hockey executive, his signed LOA will accompany.
The helmet exhibits nice game-use, with numerous scratches and surface abrasions visible, with two of the interior pads detached but present. Kovalchuk has signed across the visor in black marker, with the signature displaying well, with a second signature placed over the top that is completely worn. The stick is a Bauer Vapor model used circa 2003-04 with Atlanta with “Kovalchuk” factory graphics, with the original yellow tape on the handle and white on the blade. There is also a factory code on the underside, with nice use exhibited including wear to the taped section of blade. The jersey is a KOHO model with “XL” sizing, with a tackle twill team crest and numbers. Kovalchuk has signed the reverse “7” in black marker, with the signature presenting nicely.
