Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Located in the Toronto Islands and the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club since 1897, Hanlan's Point Stadium - also known as Island Stadium, burned down twice in the early-1900s before being rebuilt in 1910. Described at the time as the largest in all of the minor leagues with over 17,000 seats, the stadium would witness history in 1914, as Babe Ruth's hit his first professional home run on September 5, 1914. Ruth was playing for the visiting Providence Grays and pitched a one-hitter against the Leafs to go along with his three-run home run over the right-field wall in a 9-0 win for Providence. We offer a pair of Hanlan's Point Stadium programs both featuring the Sultan of Swat. There is a 1924 program for an exhibition match between the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates, with Ruth listed in the starting line-up. According to information found online, the match took place on June 19, 1924, "Ruth hits a ball that appears to be heading into the right field stands… but wait, the wind blows the ball back into fair territory, Babe getting a double on the play. The New York Yankees lost the game to the Buccos, 4-1". There is also a 1922 program, which is actually a thick "souvenir score book" for an International League match between Toronto and Rochester, with a full page photo of Ruth and the title of "King of Sluggers", along with the dates and opposing pitchers on the reverse side for his record 59-home run campaign during the 1921 MLB season. The score book also has full page team photos of the 1897, 1902, 1907, 1912 and 1917, 1918 champion Maple Leafs, and the 1929-20-21 champion Baltimore team. The 1924 program has the cover detached, with paper loss to the cover and first page, along with toning throughout and some wear, while the 1922 score book has just light wear throughout with a fold that runs through the entirety. Scarce survivors, this lot is ideal for any Toronto Maple Leafs baseball or Babe Ruth collectors.
