Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
A long cherished memento in the family of legendary superstar Gordie Howe, this "Outstanding in Hockey" trophy was originally presented to Mr. Hockey in 1950 by a Sports Guild, and it was in turn presented by Howe to his parents. In 1983, Abe Howe (Gordie's father) gifted the keepsake to his grandson Larry, the son of Gordie's sister Hellen Cummine, who is also our consignor. Larry has stated that as long as he could remember, the trophy was displayed in their home on an arch way between the living room and dining room. Direct from the Howe/Cummine family to you, we offer this prestigious trophy that is believed to be one of the first ever presented to Howe as a professional. At approx 21 1/2" in height, the slender cup sits atop a tiered wooden base with a mounted player serving as finial. The engraving to the trophy states "1950 Sports Guild Award Presented to Gordie Howe Outstanding in Hockey", with the plaque affixed to the base beneath signed but faded, with the text appearing to be "Larry All the Best Gordie Howe Mr. Hockey" (the photo on the listing with Howe holding the trophy shows nothing engraved to the plaque). Just some expected age wear is exhibited on the desirable award, with the hockey stick of the mounted player broken just beneath his lower glove.
