Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Playing his first NHL games in 1956-57, Frank Mahovlich concluded his lengthy HOF career in the WHA, playing two seasons with the Toronto Toros (1974-76), followed by a pair of seasons with the Birmingham Bulls (1976-78). A 6-time Stanley Cup champion during his days in the National Hockey League, offered here is this stick used by "The Big-M". A Victoriaville model with "F. Mahovlich" stamped to the upper shaft, the stick retains Mahovlich's original tape job of white over the handle and black wrapped around the blade while the coloured foil accent sticker around the bottom of the shaft remains present and intact as well. Signed by Mahovlich over the forehand side of the upper shaft with a thin black marker ink signature that displays without issue, the stick exhibits game-use in the form of yellowing and wear to the handle/knob tape, dark marks throughout the length of the shaft, lower shaft, heel and untaped sections of the blade and numerous red post paint transfer marks. Additionally, some wear is observed on the bottom of the blade near the heel that is visible on the backhand side while additional material is missing near the toe on the forehand. Originally gifted by Mahovlich to WHA linesman Gene Kusy, a copy of a letter of provenance signed and dated by his son, Michael, will accompany the piece.
