Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2016
There are milestones, and then there are milestones of huge significance. We’re proud to be able to offer a huge NHL milestone piece, with the actual Warwick mask Ed Belfour wore while securing his spot among the most immortal of goaltenders, surpassing the legendary Terry Sawchuk for all-time career wins. Heavily photo-matched including two images from his 448th win, the interior padding is present including added velcro for cloth forehead accessory, and dual-colour strapping to coincide with the placement of the custom graphics. The maker’s decals remain affixed to the interior, with Ed’s Trademark eagles gracing each side, and his customary “Make-a-Wish Foundation” design over the chin. The back head-piece has custom graphics showcasing a 1941 Willys for Ed’s racing company, named after his Carman Manitoba hometown. An LOA from Ed Belfour will accompany this lot.
On December 19th 2005, Ed recorded his 448th NHL win which moved him, at the time, in second place for wins all-time in the NHL. Ed currently sits in third place for wins all-time in his rightful place with the greatest goalies of the game. In beautiful condition, the mask shows wear along a few edges, with scratches present as well as a small crack near the edge of the right ear section. There are also fairly large chips noticeable, including on the chin, above the cage, and at the aforementioned crack. Worn during the 2006-06 season, the mask has been photo-matched from the chip on the eagle’s neck on the right side, to Getty images from Dec. 10th, 17th, 19th (2 images of 448th win), 23rd, 26th, January 14th, February 3rd, 7th, 28th and March 4th. The cage currently on the mask is the correct model, but doesn’t seem to be the original one on the mask when Ed used it in game-play. The mask will also be accompanied by its original carrying case, made by Warwick custom goalie masks in Port Huron Michigan.
