Worn during a pair of his most productive seasons in the NHL which included his lone Stanley Cup championship in 1999, we have a mask donned by superstar HOF netminder Ed Belfour that saw action at points in both 1997-98 and 1998-99, with the desirable head gear photo-matched to a regular season game in March of 1998, Game #3 of the 1998 Conference Finals (May 29, 1998) and Game #6 of the 1998 Conference Finals (June 5, 1998). We should note that these matches are with the original cage which is no longer affixed to the mask. Further matches done with the current affixed cage include, Games #5 (May 30, 1999) and #7 (June 4, 1999) of the 1999 Conference Finals and Game #1 of the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals (June 8, 1999). Belfour is also shown in imagery wearing this mask in Games #2 and #5 of the 1999 Stanley Cup finals.
Ed’s wonderfully executed trademark eagles grace each side, with his customary “Make-a-Wish Foundation” design over the chin section. The back plate has additional custom graphics showcasing a 1941 Willys advertising Ed’s racing company, named after his Carman, Manitoba hometown. The interior padding is present and accounted for including added velcro for the cloth forehead accessory, with dual-colour strapping to coincide with the placement of the custom graphics. A decal from maker Warwick remains affixed to the interior, with additional handwritten information behind the chin section, with “98/99 Cup” handwritten in marker by Belfour beneath the top section. A signed LOA from Ed Belfour will accompany this highly desirable Stanley Cup Finals-worn mask.
The mask shows great use, with a few scratches, surface marks and a bit of red paint transfer visible, with some chipping to the paint over the cage. The interior padding also shows wear from use, with some pilling to one of the back plate straps, with a piece of black tape added to the back plate. Getty Image #305033 (regular season game – March 28, 1998) has been matched to the particular placement of the gold flake near the left ear, while Getty Image #377647 (Game #3 of the 1998 Conference Finals – May 29, 1998) has been matched to the two tiny chips on the back edge near the right ear. Next, Getty Image #318976 (Game #6 of the 1998 Conference Finals – June 5, 1998) has been matched to the particular placement of the gold flake over the chin that encompasses the “Make-a-Wish Foundation” emblem. This is followed by fourteen included numeric screen grab images, with three from Game #5 of the 1999 Conference Finals (May 30, 1999) matched to the white mark on the front of the mask, as well as to the drilled hole from the placement of the previous cage, while another two from Game #7 of the 1999 Conference Finals (June 4, 1999) have been matched to the white mark on the front of the mask, with a third image matched to the drilled hole left from the placement of the previous cage. Also from Game #7 of the 1999 Conference Finals, two images are matched to the section over the back plate that is covered with black tape. Two images from Game #1 of the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals (June 8, 1999) have been matched to numerous chips on the cage of the mask, as well as to the drilled hole left from the placement of the previous cage. Finally, three images from the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals (unknown date) have been matched to the white mark on the front of the mask, as well as to the drilled hole from the placement of the previous cage, while an additional screen grab is showing the section over the back plate that is covered with black tape. The mask will be accompanied by a Warwick travel/carry bag, with “Custom Made for Ed Belfour Dallas Stars” embroidered.
