Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2020
Known and respected for their bravery and tenacity, hockey goaltenders are historically unique in sports as the men that face the greatest punishment, with the valorous and fearless practitioners going maskless for nearly the first century of the game. Originally acquired from M&R Sports (for Molson and Rene Sports) in Ste-Therese, Quebec during the 1960s by our consignor, he was told by Eric Molson that the offered mask was left behind by Jacques Plante after he was traded to the New York Rangers in the summer of 1963, and would have originally been used by the superstar in practices with the Canadiens. A high-quality pro-style fiberglass mask with vintage strapping intact, the interior padding has been removed, with what appears to be “3/27” etched to the interior surface. The mask was also reinforced with added fiberglass across the tip of the nose, around the mouth, on both cheeks and over the forehead, as well as along the entire perimeter. A letter from our consignor will accompany this vintage prized mask.
There is expected surface wear throughout, with some chipping to the finish visible including over the chin, nose and forehead sections, with additional wear from use to the interior. The strapping is also quite worn.
