Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Attending the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union’s Montreal Bulldogs training camp in the early-1940s to stay in shape for his aspiring hockey career, Don Durno was a member of the Toronto RCAF Hurricanes Grey Cup championship squad in 1942 and later joined the Argonauts. Durno would serve as president of the Ontario Junior Football League from 1960-76, and was also the Argo alumni president for 27 years, from 1965-92. After football, Durno organized more than 50 charity golf tournaments, and helped raise over $4 million for the Charlie Conacher Cancer Committee. Obtained directly from his family, we have an early-1950s Toronto Argonauts jersey with use attributed to Durno, in 1951. An Elcraft label is affixed to the collar, with the vintage garment measuring-out across the upper reverse to approx a size 48. Featuring full sleeve and shoulder bands in solid white along with the cuffs and collar, “60” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in baby blue satin twill. A period photo of the Argonauts in game-action with a player pictured wearing the number 60 jersey attributed to Durno will accompany.
Sporting heavier wear to the material throughout, the lower hem is torn away, with a few holes over the sleeves and some discolouration/staining to the material in areas. There is also a large hole over the upper reverse, just above the affixed “6” of “60”.
