Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Winning their third Stanley Cup championship in 1943, the Detroit Red Wings would go through considerable changes as the war years waned, with a number of important players crucial to the success of Motor City joining the fray. Harry Lumley would backstop the club beginning in 1943-44, with Ted Lindsay coming aboard the following season and flagship superstar Gordie Howe making his Motown debut in 1946-47. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a team-signed photo of the 1944-45 Stanley Cup finalist Detroit Red Wings. At 8" x 10" and pictured in the traditional team pose, signers include HOFers Lindsay, Lumley, Seibert, S Howe and Bill Quackenbush, along with Carveth, Hollett, Wocky, Liscombe, McAtee, Bruneteau, Jackson, Bukovich, and Normie Smith. There is also a secretarial signature of Jack Adams. Most of the dark ink signatures display well, with a few light, and a few hard to see against the dark background. The photo itself shows heavy wear including creases and tape residue to the reverse, with a notation from Hamlyn on the reverse stating he received the photo back March 28, 1945. A JSA LOA will accompany.
Beginning life as the passion of one youth growing up in Newfoundland during the late-1930s, ER Hamlyn was bitten by the collecting bug as a teenager, and began to seek out the signatures of both contemporary and past hockey stars, with his efforts culminating in the world class collection of signed photos and letters that encompass his incomparable autograph collection, with many unique items and extremely rare signatures making up the vast collection.
Through effective letter writing, first to teams, and then when information was received, directly to the players themselves, Hamlyn would request the addressed parties sign a photo he himself would provide, with the overwhelming majority honoring the enthusiastic collector's wishes. And enamored with the uniforms of both the Montreal Maroons and New York Americans – despite never seeing these teams play in person, Hamlyn had the foresight to seek out the signatures of past retired stars from long forgotten and defunct franchises. The insightful collector also recorded information now invaluable to his collection, with most of the signed letters and photos having dates listed when they were received back signed.
