Raising the art form of penalty killing to an exact science, Derek Sanderson was one of the NHL’s all-time premier practitioners of playing with a man short, with his prodigious face-off abilities and zealous checking forever frustrating the opposition. A veteran of 598 National Hockey League games and a two-time Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins, offered here is this stick used by Sanderson as a member of the Bruins during their Stanley Cup championship season of 1969-70 that has been signed by at least sixteen (16) members of that legendary squad. A Northland Custom Pro model twig with "Sanderson" stamped over the topside of the shaft, his number "16" is also stamped over the upper shaft while both sides of the upper shaft sport stamps for "Larson Industries" and the Bruins equipment provider, "Woody Dumart and Co. Needham Heights, Mass". Retaining its original tape job of white-over-black around the handle/knob and black around the hooked blade, the stick shows game-wear via numerous dark marks and abrasions throughout the lower shaft, heel and untaped sections of the blade, which shows some wear along the bottom edge near the toe and cracks near the toe also. Additionally, a pair of holes are visible on the backhand side of the blade near the toe, made for the purpose of mounting/display while darkening/scorching appears on the forehand side from being heated with a blowtorch to deepen the curve. For the signatures, signed over the forehand side of the shaft in blue ballpoint pen ink, most remain legible despite fading from age, with those of Harry Sinden, Derek Sanderson, Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, Johnny Bucyk, Dallas Smith, Ron murphy, Wayne Cashman, Rick Smith, Jim Harrison, Johnny McKenzie, Ed Johnston, Bill Speer, Garnet Bailey, Jim Lorentz and Fred Standfield able to be made out.
