Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Playing fourteen (14) seasons in the National Hockey League between 1959 and 1973 with the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars and Vancouver Canucks before multiple sclerosis led to his retirement, Dave Balon would also play a total of nine (9) games in the WHA with the Quebec Nordiques to close out his career. Suiting up in four (4) NHL All-Star Games and winning a pair of Stanley Cup's with the Canadiens, offered here is this stick used by Balon during his time in Montreal during the mid-1960s. A CCM Custom Pro model offering with "Balon" and his number "20" stamped to the upper shaft, a stamp from McNiece's, the Canadiens' equipment provider, is stamped over the topside of the shaft as well. Retaining its original tape job of white over the handle, white-over-black around the knob and black around the blade, the stick displays game-use in the form of dark marks over the lower shaft, heel and untaped areas of the blade. Of note, the toe of the blade shows a crack that extends in towards the middle of it underneath the tape, which also shows some minor discoloration over both sides, while the bottom of the heel shows some minor wear as well.
