Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019

Dressing for games 1 & 2 of the 1961 Stanley Cup finals despite never playing a single shift in the NHL, Chico Maki would represent the Indian head for over a dozen seasons, hanging up his skates after the 1975-76 campaign. We have a vintage Chicago Black Hawks durene jersey that was worn by the Sault Ste. Marie native during the 1974 Stanley Cup playoffs. A Wilson label with “48” sizing sits above a Gunzo’s tag affixed to the collar, with the Gunzo’s label partially detached and frayed. Styled with the famous multi-coloured Indian head team crest with chain-stitched detailing, “16” has been placed over the sleeves and verso in black tackle twill numbers with red trim, with matching chain-stitched tomahawk crests over each shoulder. The adjustable-style fight strap remains intact, with a “74 PO” swatch placed over the inside hem to denote playoff use.
Sporting a few large stick marks over the lower front and beneath the front right shoulder, a few additional dark marks are present, with some red goalpost paint transfer over the reverse hem. A few small holes are also present over and near the left elbow, with team repairs over each elbow and lower sleeve. We should note that there is evidence of a short former nameplate, with nameplates mandated for television use and later removed. It should be further noted that the garment was most likely recycled down to a farm club, and we see no evidence of numbers or team crest alterations, with this recycling typical for the Black Hawks during this period.
