Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

A fantastic fine-point Wayne Gretzky signature graces the lower shaft of Wayne’s game-used wood Hespeler 5500 from the 1997-98 NHL season. The familiar black foam “Jack the Gripper” handle is there but the blade is now bare of any tape, however, it is quite obvious that the black wrap once covered the blade and has left residue wherever it made contact with a puck. Factory markings include the “Gretzky” identifier along with the 110-115 stiff flex stamp and a smudged batch code on the back. Nice game use here with about a dozen stick slashes on the shaft and that evidence of pucks launching from the now-bare blade. This stick has been specially customized with a code written on the butt end and a small hologram sticker added by our consignor.
Wayne’s three years in New York saw him reach a number of milestones including his 1072nd goal, surpassing Gordie Howe’s WHA and NHL totals and his final goal, scored on March 29, 1999 - a game winner that would bring his total to an astonishing 892 regular season markers.
