Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
The witness to countless NHL tilts over the lengthy period of three decades, this historic bench once housed in the venerable old Madison Square Garden on Eighth Avenue and at the later incarnation at Penn Plaza, was used by both the New York Rangers as well as visiting clubs, from approx 1968 until it was replaced following the 1997-98 NHL season. Believed to originate from the mid-1960s, this is one of six benches used during NHL games throughout the period according to the accompanying New York Rangers’ LOA including during the Stanley Cup championship season of 1993-94. At 46” in length, the solid wood bench has been painted dark grey, with a thick carpet in matching colour but now heavily worn used as the seat cover. Engraved metal plaques have been affixed at each end, with a Rangers logo over the left, and “This wooden players’ bench was used by the New York Rangers and their opponents during National Hockey League games at Madison Square Garden from 1968-98” over the right.
It should be noted that according to the Rangers LOA, the benches were constantly moved and stored during other events in the famous venue, with each bench used at various times by both the Rangers and visiting clubs. The bench shows considerable wear from constant use with the paint worn in numerous areas along with splits and separations to the wood along the bottom at each side. As mentioned, the seat section is also somewhat worn, with the material faded.
