Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Led by 1st Team All-Stars Frank Mahovlich, Ken Dryden and Guy Lapointe, the Montreal Canadiens captured the regular season title in 1972-73, with 52 wins and 120 points. The Big M was at the top of his game and came close to duplicating his most productive season, firing 38 goals and 93 points, three shy of his previous season's total. For finishing atop the NHL's Eastern Division, members of the Canadiens received miniature Prince of Wales trophies to commemorate their fine campaign, with “Frank Mahovlich” engraved along with that of the trophy on a metal plaque applied to one side of the 2-inch high wooden base, while engraving on a second plaque over the reverse reads "NHL Champions – 1972-73 – Club De Hockey Canadien". Four silver-plated hockey sticks rise up from the base to support a cup with removable lid (glued down), giving the award a total height of 13". An LOA signed by Frank Mahovlich will accompany, with the trophy originating from his personal collection.
As mentioned, the originally removable lid has been glued down, with just some minor tarnishing to the trophy present. There are also a few scratches to the “Mahovlich” name plaque, with a few small areas of surface loss, mostly along the lower sections. There is also what appears to be “Prince of Wales Trophy” mailing stamps affixed to the underside.
