Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Two different rookie cards of hockey immortal Art Ross depict him in sweaters of the Haileybury Club during his playing days as a top defenceman and describe him as a Sporting Goods Merchant(!) on the reverse. Ross’ lifetime in hockey would see him as a Stanley Cup champion as a player, an innovator, an inventor, a coach and a general manager, helping to improve our wonderful sport. Both card #8 (VG 3) and #12 (Good 2) display rather nicely but have “MK” qualifiers, due to a, presumably, former owner’s name stamped on the back. Meanwhile, another early hockey star, Newsy Lalonde, is captured in his Renfrew turtleneck sweater, with card #36, the last in the C56 set, slabbed and labeled “Authentic – Altered”. The same “Arnold Mitchell” stamp appears on the back of it, with the upper border, at the right corner, appearing to have been snipped. A diamond cut and light creasing are also to report. From Imperial Tobacco’s first hockey card set, these will forever be coveted collectibles.
