Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
A veteran of 161 NHL games during his career after being drafted 62nd overall by the New York Islanders at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Anders Nilsson would wear the colours of New York, Edmonton, St. Louis, Buffalo, Vancouver and Ottawa during his time in the league, retiring after being traded to the Tampa Bay Lighting in December of 2020. A two-time IIHF World Championship with Team Sweden, offered here, and hailing from the 2018-19 season in which he split a total of thirty-six (36) games between the Vancouver Canucks and Ottawa Senators, is this mask worn by Nilsson as a member of the Canucks. A CCM GFL Pro model shell made by Lefevre with intact strapping and a white coloured cats eye cage over the front, a sticker reading "Pour:/For: A. Nilsson 17/09/18 - Powered Par:/By: Lefevre" is affixed inside the left side of the jaw while the paint design was executed by famed mask artist DaveArt and is entitled Soul Of The Canucks - Project 3” with a DaveArt signature appearing just under the temple on the left side while copyright information is found at the back edge on the top of the mask. Featuring a stunning clean cut Canucks design with crossed hockey sticks found throughout, closer inspection reveals other details including images of various Canucks orca whale logos, Sweden's "Tre Kronor" crest, the NHL shield and portrait's of Nilsson's children while the goaltender's number "31" as well as the flag from his home city of Lulea are displayed over the chin. On the backplate, imagery of a cartoon bear and pride flag are seen with the base of the design matching the rest of the mask. Missing the sweatband on the interior and accompanied by a Lefevre mask bag, the bucket shows just light wear via a few minor puck marks and abrasions throughout the entirety of the piece along with some rusting in the middle of the cage and a small number of tiny chips around the edge of the shell in its entirety. Regarding the photo-match, the mask is matched with Getty Image #1076174520 (December 29th, 2018 vs Calgary) to puck marks seen in the cloth strap above the left temple and to a couple of the light puck marks on the bars of the cage.
Of note, Nilsson also wore the mask as a member of the Ottawa Senators after he was traded there from the Canucks mid-season and was waiting for his new one to arrive.
