Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022

A lover of food issues and little/oddball sets and/or an entrepreneurial hobbyist is going to have a blast with this mostly-1980s stash, with the first-rate condition among the attributes. Duplication is a good thing too, with several Wayne Gretzky appearances contributing and heightening the allure. Wayne and Patrick Roy headline two complete 81-card 1986-87 Kraft Drawings sets, with all cards still in their original packaging – beauty. Gretzky is the focal point of three different Oilers Red Rooster ensembles and Brett Hull stars in a similar Flames set from ‘87-88, with Gretz (2) and Dale Hawerchuk featured amid Oilers (5) and Jets (3) “Hockey Dollars.” Wayne and several other Hall of Famers are featured in swell O-Pee-Chee Super Photo issues, the 5” by 7” cards represented by two high grade 24-card sets, although we spot some edge roughness on one of the Gretzkys. There’s a set of ’81-82 Post Stars in Action (stand-up) cards, with all 28 still in original cellophane packaging, while four 21-card sets available through Esso in ’83-84 include Messier and Coffey. Esso was also responsible for 48 sticker-like cards in ’88-89, with three sets and three unused albums present. A set of little plastic hockey pucks with circular hockey cards inside and offered by Kellogg’s in ’84-85 include a display board and an unstuck identifying sticker in the original shipping box and what appears to be an additional four sets. Wayne and Mario and Patrick are in the mix in multiple sets of Topps All-Star and logo insert stickers from ’85-86 (3), ’87-88 (2) and ’88-89 (4), while Helmet & Sticker Decal sets from ’79-80 Topps packs total five, with three dozen duplicates thrown-in. Guy Lafleur and the Canadiens appear in four ’82-83 Steinberg sets, each accompanied by an album. Numerous ’90-91 OPC box bottom panels were carefully cut from boxes, with Gretzky starring on seven and Roy and Lemieux on four others, with seven Topps four-card panels from various seasons also on hand. Some Topps and Fleer baseball flattened full boxes (8) are from the ‘80s and 1990, while cooler are complete unopened Kraft Dinner boxes (3) from ’90-91 picturing Gretz, Lemieux and Brett Hull cards on their respective backs and three unopened JELL-O boxes with cards of Wayne, Brett and Yzerman still intact. Most notable among the rest are five Gartlan ceramic cards featuring a depiction of Gretzky, with three of them hand-signed on the back by artist Michael J. Taylor. Other miscellaneous goodies are to be discovered – like we alluded to at the top, you’re going to have fun, fun with this years-in-the-making high grade collection.
