Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Mark Messier’s arrival in the NHL during the 1979-80 season signaled the beginning of a storied
career that would span over 25 seasons. Known for his unparalleled leadership and clutch
performances, Messier led the Edmonton Oilers to five Stanley Cup championships in the 1980s
before captaining the New York Rangers to their historic 1994 victory—ending a 54-year
championship drought. A six-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Hart Trophy winner,
Messier remains one of the most respected figures in hockey history.
Presented here is an outstanding example of Messier’s highly sought-after 1980-81
O-Pee-Chee rookie card (#289), graded MINT 9 by PSA. Of the 4,590 copies submitted to PSA
over the years, this pop-339 example is only bettered by 45 others on the PSA population
report.
The card is housed in a PSA holder that remains in excellent condition, with a few fine scratches to be noted.
