Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
With the rules regarding amateurism seemingly unfair, a change was implemented at the 1976 IIHF World Championships, with this tournament the first to feature major league professionals from the NHL and WHA, although only the United States made use of the new rule, recalling eight pros from the Minnesota North Stars and Minnesota Fighting Saints. Despite this, the Red, White and Blue managed only a fourth place finish, with a strong undefeated Czechoslovak team capturing the gold, followed by the Soviets capturing the silver and Sweden the bronze. We present a 1976 IIHF World Championship gold medal. Measuring 2 3/4" in diameter with the original blue, red and gold ribbon attached and "1976" to the bail, "World Championships" appears in raised letters circling the perimeter on the obverse along with two generic players. Featuring a painted globe IIHF logo with crossed hockey sticks on the reverse, it is encompassed by "International Ice Hockey Federation" in matching style raised letters. The medal displays beautifully and remains in near mint condition.
