Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024

Bobby Orr, the Parry Sound, Ontario native who would leave an impression on the hockey world like no other player appears here on his 1966-67 Topps rookie card as he embarked on a sensational, all-too-short ten-year run as our sport's most exciting performer. Orr’s forever-in-demand card #35 of Topps' 1966-67 issue pictures Bobby at 18 and is an absolute prerequisite to an important cardboard collection. Part of the write-up on the back reads "...certainly will become one of the future stars in the NHL. A rushing defenceman who can set up goals as well as score them." Bobby indeed went on to forge his legacy as arguably the greatest player ever to lace on a pair of skates, rendering his rookie cards coveted. Made even more appealing by the flawless blue marker ink autograph that has been penned by Orr over the front of the rookie card here, the desirable signature has been given PSA's grade of a perfect "10" while the card itself has been deemed to be an "AUTHENTIC ALTERED" example according to the company's population report, showing only "AUTHENTIC" over the label due to the lack of space. With it not for certain how the card was altered, the story goes that the card was retouched with colour at the corners but inspection of it appears to show no such thing. Displaying extremely well with smooth edges, sharp corners, gorgeous colours, clean surfaces and precise centering, the card is housed in a good condition PSA holder that shows just light scratches over both sides that are worth mentioning for accuracy.
