Featuring several men who competed in the Western Canada Hockey League and who would go on to gain Hockey Hall of Fame recognition, this sensational set of encapsulated black and white collectibles has earned “All-Time Finest” bragging rights at PSA. Comprised of unredeemed cards (sets of cards sent to the Paulin Chambers Company, in exchange for a prize, had a hole punched in them or were stamped on the back), this assembly boasts a highly impressive (38) Pop 1 examples which are alone in first place on their respective lines of the PSA Population Report, with another 15 tied for first place. The only unredeemed Paulin’s to earn a mark of NM-MT 8, that of #48-Crutchy Morrison, leads condition-wise and is joined by five of the ten NM 7s in existence, #s 34, 42, 51, 58 and 66. Notables among the Pop 1s with none higher are 15-Lorne Chabot, 22-Dick Irvin and 62-Red Dutton at EX-MT 6, along with 45-Duke Keats (EX+ 5.5) and a Hall of Fame trio at EX 5; 30-Barney Stanley, 41-Bullet Joe Simpson, 69-Harry Oliver. The key Newsy Lalonde card (EX-MT 6) is a second-to-none Pop 2, while VG-EX 4s of 39-George Hainsworth (Pop 8) and 63-Herb Gardiner (Pop 3) are also tied for first place among their peers. Cards of HOFers Bill Cook, George Hay and Rusty Crawford also bolster the lineup. With a set rating of 6.29, the jackpot has for four years been regarded as The Number 1 Set of All-Time at PSA and now presents serious pre-war collectors with a splendid opportunity. Please note that at the end of the auction, the set will be sold to the highest aggregate bidding, whether that is the sum of the individual lots or the highest bid for the complete set. Our website will automatically reflect whichever portion has received the highest bidding total.
Also to note is that although the Paulin’s cards have always been catalogued as a 1923-24 issue, extensive research by hobby veteran and author Bobby Burrell actually points to a two-year promotion beginning a year later, thus giving a 1924-26 time frame for the cards.
