Every great story, whether fictional or actual, has a genesis.. a beginning... an origin. Some are more interesting and appeal to our need to venerate. Some are the making of legends. Through a myriad of such events, rose one of the greatest personalities of the 20th century, Babe Ruth. The genesis of greatness began for The Babe in the autumn of 1915, when the young and impressionable 20 years old pitcher first stepped onto the field for Game 1 of the World Series. Despite playing a minor roll in this beginning, it would be the catalyst that sparked one of the greatest baseball careers in history. This 1915 World Series program from Ruth’s historic first Fall Classic has been scored, and hails from the third game played on October 11th in Boston.
The Phillies first post-season appearance, they were facing the formidable Red Sox who were starting to make the World Series a habit, with four attempts at baseball's greatest prize between the years 1912 and 1918. If recent history was any indication, it was not on the side of the Phillies, as the last 4 out of 5 Series' played were won by American League representatives. With each of the five games heavily contested and won by a single run (except Game 1), it would take eighth and ninth inning blasts from outfielders Duffy Lewis and Harry Hooper to seal the deal in Game 5, for a Boston Series victory.
The program remains solid and supple, with a large vertical crease commonly seen on programs. Complete and scored in pencil, the spine is tight with both staples present, with all pages firmly attached. There is a 1” tear along the bottom of the spine, and there are notations made in both pencil and pen, including a name on the inside cover along with a price listed of “30.17” and a date of “3/19/66”. The back cover features an advertisement for Stag Sweaters, with an image of the ’15 Red Sox including Ruth, along with an unobtrusive pen notation beneath of “1915 – Boston American League and World’s Champion – 1915”. There is some light toning to the covers and interior pages along with some very minor water staining on the cover’s upper left corner. Despite these imperfections, the program displays absolutely beautifully and will definitely appeal to any post-season program collectors. As a point of reference, a 1915 World Series program also for Game 3 in superior condition sold at Robert Edward Auctions for $7050.00 in 2010.
