Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
The signature of Hockey Hall of Fame builder Sir Montagu Allan renders this stock certificate appealing indeed for those who have yet to land an autograph of the man who donated the Allan Cup. A Montreal sportsman and financier, Allan donated the trophy in 1908 after the Stanley Cup became a professional trophy, and following a suggestion from Montreal's William Northey. The Allan Cup was awarded annually to Canada's top senior amateur team. The esthetically pleasing certificate is for 100 shares of the Acadia Coal Company (of Nova Scotia), with each share worth $100. It is dated April 6th, 1900 and signed by the company's president, H. Montagu Allan in thick fountain pen with two small punch-holes below his signature. Measuring approximately 8 by 10-1/2, aside for a light horizontal fold line it is free of tears and other notable flaws and will make for a prized possession. Allan was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 and died six years later.
