A noted enforcer adept at penalty killing, with an especially aggressive style of physical play, Tim Hunter was twice-nominated for both the King Clancy and Bill Masterton Awards, and holds the Calgary Flames franchise record for career penalty minutes. Recently obtained directly from Tim Hunter, we have a photo-matched Flames alternate captain’s jersey worn by the Calgary native during the 1989 Stanley Cup finals. A worn Maska label is affixed to the collar, with the jersey measuring-out to roughly a size 52. Styled with the Flames team crest in layered tackle twill, “19” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with the 1989 Stanley Cup finals crest residing over the left shoulder. The jersey also features a second customized loop-style fight strap added to the inside front. Sporting great wear to the material from game-use throughout, there are marks, burns, scrapes and fabric pulls, with a small slit near the left elbow and discolouration to the material just above the right cuff. There is also pilling to interior sections. Hunter played in 19 of 22 playoffs games in 1988-89 including the first 4 games of the Stanley Cup Finals, and had an assist on the game-winning goal in Game 1 (May 14th), and added another assist in Game 3 (May 19th).
A photo from the book "Countdown to the Stanley Cup; an illustrated story of the Calgary Flames" shows an image of Tim Hunter, Lanny McDonald and Jim Peplinski being presented with the Campbell Conference Bowl. The image shows the perfect positioning of the number "9" on the right sleeve and some of its details including the small loose red thread on the bottom of the middle section of the "9", as well as the two fold marks on the lower half right edge of the "9" in the red material. Additionally, an image from Game 2 of the finals (May 17th) has been matched to a number of black marks on the lower right sleeve, while a second image from Game 2 has been matched to the unrepaired cut in the lower left sleeve in the lower yellow striping.
