Originally produced for use in the commercial market, we have four wonderful and imaginative works of art, executed by staff artists from Disney in the 1960s/1970s. Ranging in size from roughly 4 ½” x 6 ½” to 10” x 12”, three of the original works have been executed on Bainbridge artist illustration board, along with an example on similar material. Pluto the dog is featured on each original artwork, which includes the mischievous mutt in full stride biting down on a Christmas gift, one showing the scamp drooling over the bone sitting in his food bowl, and one pictures a turtle and squirrel as Pluto looks on. The last illustration pictures a line drawing of Pluto in a characteristic pose.
The breakdown for each original Disney artwork is as follows. 1) Pluto line drawing (4 ½” x 6 ½”). On thick artist board, a simple line drawing of Pluto has been executed, with “Pluto” written in pencil below, and to the right of the illustration. Some toning is present. 2) Pluto and the Christmas Gift (6 ¼” x 10”). Pluto is pictured in full flight, anxious to deliver a Christmas gift. There are a few spots with toning from tape residue, along with a pencil notation along the far left side. There’s additional notations on verso, along with another residue stain that doesn’t breach the surface. 3) Pluto and his Bone (10” x 12”). The lovable dog is all happy, as he’s about to feast on a large meal. A few stray and faint pencil lines are present along with a few spots. There are also pen notations on verso. 4) Pluto with Turtle and Squirrel (7 ½” x 10”). The three are pictured frolicking around a hollow log. With no issues to note, the illustration remains in beautiful condition.
During the 1960s and 1970s the Disney Corporation had a close alliance with a Toronto-based advertising company. This company used depictions of famous Disney characters on bread wrappers, milk cartons and other products. Disney sent its own artists to assist with the layout of these promotional pieces and these hand sketched drawings were done by actual Disney artists and each is a one-of-a-kind original Disney piece of art. These sketches had remained in the possession of a retired advertising employee and are now available for your enjoyment.
