Sensational collection of programs heralds the closing of New York’s “old” Madison Square Garden (1925-1968), and the opening of the “new” Garden, both on Feb. 11, 1968. We have a 13-page booklet detailing the new Garden; a 44-page “Opening Event” program from that Feb. 1968 evening that also includes a ticket stub from that night that featured Bob Hope (with his picture on the stub); a 56-page program from the final game played at the “old” MSG, between the Rangers and Detroit on Feb. 11, 1968; a 2-page typed list of guest of honor players for the final game and their itinerary; and along with these are 3 Rangers programs from 1964, 1965, and playoffs 1968.
The 13-page booklet is in excellent, unmarked condition with no creasing, as is the “Opening Event” program that among the information from the night’s gala event, lists the entertainment as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Pearl Bailey, and Barbara Eden. The 2 ½” x 5” ticket stub from that night is in excellent condition as well, with sharp edges and corners and no marks or creases. The hockey game played that night, the final game at the “old” barn, is between the Rangers and Detroit Red Wings and the game program is in excellent, intact condition with no marks or creases. The 2-page Guest Sheet from the final game lists invited players from different teams and includes, among others, Joliat, Richard, and Plante from the Canadiens, Howe, Lindsay, and Abel from Detroit, the Cooks, Seibert, Bathgate etc. from the Rangers, Shore, Cowley, Clapper etc. from the Bruins, Bentley and Conacher from Chicago, Carr and Gagnon from the N.Y. Americans, Northcott from the Maroons, Apps, Broda, Lumley, Stanowski and others from the Leafs, and referees Cooper Smeaton, Bill Chadwick, and Frank Udvari. This cool intinerary is in great shape with normal fold creases. The 1964 Rangers-Hawks program is a complete 32-pager and has a few pen markings on the lineup page and some small stains and marks throughout, but overall is in nice condition. A ticket stub from that night is taped on the first inside page. The 1965 program, again a Rangers-Hawks tilt, has the ticket stub taped to the front cover and has the shots on goal handwritten on the inside scorecard and a couple of players’ names crossed out on the lineup page. The playoff program between the Rangers and Hawks from the spring of 1968, not long after the new Garden opened, has some dirt on the cover and is missing its lineup page. All 6 programs and booklets measure 8 1/2" x 11", while the 2-page players list and itinerary measures 8 1/2" x 14".
