Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015

Before Habs goaltender Steve Penney surprised the hockey world with his outstanding rookie play in the 1983-84 playoffs by standing on his head against the Bruins, Nordiques, and Islanders and posting a sensational 2.20 GAA in the process, he first toiled in the minors with the IHL Flint Generals and AHL Nova Scotia Voyageurs. Most likely from those early-1980s minor league years is this game-used Koho stick wielded by Penney, with his original tape on the blade and knob, and with “Penney” stamped on the upper shaft and the code “001261” closer to the paddle. With game-wear showing in marks from top to bottom, wear on the bottom of the blade, some unraveling of tape on the blade and knob, and a crack on the tip of the blade, it’s a fine game-used stick from a fellow who made a huge stir and who, due to injuries, was ultimately replaced by a young fellow named Patrick Roy in the Canadiens’ nets.
