Skating in over 200 WHA games for three different clubs, Brian Coates was drafted by the Boston Bruins 80th overall in 1972, but never played in a single NHL game. From his first of five seasons in the rebel league, we have a Chicago Cougars jersey worn by the Carman native in 1973-74. A Wilson label with “46” sizing graces the collar, with a chain-stitched “73” year swatch affixed over the inside hem. Featuring a solid green tackle twill team crest with chain-stitched yellow cougar, “11” is sewn over the left breast, sleeves and verso in matching material, with “Coates” in green heat-pressed vinyl letters over the affixed nameplate. A garter-style fight strap has also been utilized, and we should note evidence of a former larger nameplate. There is pilling to the interior sleeves, with a few dark marks to the front and sleeves. There is also a small stain to the upper reverse along with team repairs to the collar (very large repair) and upper right reverse. We should also note that these 1973-74 Cougars jerseys were likely recycled and worn in the first portion of the 1974-75 season according to previous sold examples.
