Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
Complete pre-war hockey card sets in any condition are alluring, with numerous rink legends featured in the Canadian Chewing Gum Company’s 1933-34 issue, one of the first set of cards issued with gum. For those not in the know, we should explain that the V252 cards included a section at the bottom that contained a single letter and collectors were offered a home hockey game if they cut off enough different letters to spell the full names of five of the nine NHL teams at the time, hence the trimmed ensemble offered here, with the cards now measuring approximately 2-1/2” square. Some classic well-known images of some of hockey’s all-time greats, as well as swell (bilingual) write-ups are featured, with most cards exhibiting evidence of once having been pasted, although almost all text is legible; the backs of four (common) cards have sizeable paper loss. The majority of the cards are either crease-free or have creasing that we deem not drastic/unsightly. Heavily/multi-creased cards are the minority, with pencil writing on the front of two cards to mention; Alex Connell and Murray Murdoch. Meanwhile, the new owner will no doubt appreciate the star power, led by Howie Morenz, Aurele Joliat and King Clancy, as well as the numerous Hall of Famers whose cards carry the “RC” designation – Charlie Conacher, Ace Bailey, Dit Clapper, Nels Stewart, George Hainsworth, Lionel Conacher, Busher Jackson, Red Horner, Red Dutton, Babe Siebert, Bun Cook, Chuck Gardiner and Ebbie Goodfellow – what a lineup! Check out all our images and decide whether these charming relics will be entering your pre-war hockey card shrine.
