Replacing the NHL's All-Star festivities for the 1978–79 NHL season, the 1979 Challenge Cup featured the Soviet Union national ice hockey team taking on a squad of NHL All-Stars in three contests at Madison Square Garden, on February 8th, 10th, and 11th. This 1979 Challenge Cup NHL All-Stars jersey was worn by WHA and NHL superstar Ulf Nilsson. With a large Cosby label with “50” sizing tightly affixed to the inner collar, the vintage durene feature’s an embroidered NHL shield team crest, with matching additional crests over each shoulder with Nilsson’s number “12” sewn to the sleeves and verso in orange-over-black layered tackle twill. “Nilsson” appears affixed directly over the upper reverse in individual black twill letters with embroidered orange trim, with no fight strap utilized on the interior.
Jumping from the WHA to the NHL with the New York Rangers, Ulf Nilsson would register 169 points in 170 games played in the National Hockey League, helping the Rangers to an appearance in the 1979 Stanley Cup Finals. Selected to the NHL All-Stars team for the Challenge Cup exhibition series, Nilsson saw action in games 1 and 3. The jersey shows light game use with stick marks over the left elbow and right cuff as well as board burns to the lower left front hem and lower right sleeve. A handful of snags and pulls are found throughout. Of note, the jersey is a light greyish color because of washing and not white as originally issued and that glue was used to affix each crest/patch before being sewn – common for garments of the era, with the glue visible through the material when viewing the interior of the jersey. Additionally, the jersey is signed at the top of the back number “2” by Nilsson in black marker with added number “12” and “1979” inscriptions, with everything displaying without issue. From his personal collection, an LOA signed by Ulf Nilsson will accompany.
