A three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning three straight between 1962 and 1964, Don Simmons’ was named an NHL All-Star in 1963, registering 15 wins in 28 games played. Hailing from his time in Toronto, we offer this CCM Pattern Made Custom stick made for teammate Johnny Bower that was used by Simmons on January 18th, 1964, in which the Leafs were trashed by the Boston Bruins, 11-0. The story states that the consignor was an attendee at the Dick Gamble Hockey School in Toronto during the Summer of 1965 where Simmons was one of the instructors and gave him the stick, stating it was the one he had used in the January 18th contest. Stamped with “Bower” over the upper part of the shaft, the original tape job of white-over-black remains on the handle and knob while black appears over the blade and upper part of the paddle. With the striping accent still intact, the taped section of the blade shows marks with tears at the heel and toe while the blade and paddle wraps are rasied off of the wood underneath. Fully intact with no cracks or breaks, puck marks are seen to the paddle and shaft as well as red post paint transfer. Simmons has signed the paddle with a large black ink signature, adding an “H-11-0” inscription underneath, with the “H” likely meaning “home” followed by the score of the game that the stick was used in, with both the autograph and inscription display without issue.
