One of the most coveted of all Bobby Orr cards from his playing days is the scarce 1966-67 Topps Test issue, believed to have been, like the rest of the 66-card set, distributed/available only in a small part of the United States. For the novices/uniformed, we can tell you that a lighter wood-grain border, English-only text on the back and the set’s size (66 cards as opposed to 132) are the main differences with Topps’ regular ’66-67 issue. The example of Orr’s card #35 here recently received an EX+ 5.5 assessment at PSA, with light wear at three corners observed, while when viewing the reverse, light dings (two bottom corners) are visible. We’ve always loved how the write-up on Bobby’s rookie card concludes, “A rushing defenceman who can set up goals as well as score them.” And how! With regards to another Howe, Gordie’s card #23 leads the raw roster and it too, (like Orr and 13 others), has a white “line” down either the right side (7) or along the bottom (5), with two white edges appearing on 26-Rod Gilbert’s card. The Howe entry has similar characteristics to the Orr, but also a scratch and blemish on the back, while 40-Bobby Hull is EX+. We count another (40) in the EX and EX+ realm (a few may make it to EX-MT), while light corner wear and, at times, a corner ding send 16 to VG-EX or VG-EX+. The only conventional crease spotted is a small one affecting 62-Mikita (VG), with the first (1-D. Hull) and last (66-McKenzie) cards (both VG), a few miscut cards and two (20-Pronovost, 44-Wharram) with poor registration also to mention, as is the often less-than-perfect top-to-bottom centering and the slight curvature of the stack. Orr and company await your special vintage card shrine and will significantly enhance your overall repertoire – ’66-67 Topps Test sets are offered very infrequently.
