Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” by 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number has survived. Over 100 different players exist, with “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” appearing on the cork backing of each. With 5 of 6 “Original Six” teams represented, Montreal examples include: Rousseau, H. Richard (x2), Provost, Backstrom, Moore, Marshall, Maniago, Johnson, Hicke, Goyette, Geoffrion (x2), Fontinato, Berenson (x2), Beliveau, J.C. Tremblay (x2), Gilles Tremblay, and Jean Guy Talbot. The Rangers make up most of the remaining tiles including: Worsley, Langlois, Ingarfield, Howell, Horvath, Hebenton, Harvey, Hampson, Hadfield, Cahan, Bathgate, Balon and Muzz Patrick. The last five tiles include Boston Bruins Tom Williams, Jerry Toppazini and Charlie Burns with Bob Nevin of the Maple Leafs and Marcel Pronovost of the Red Wings being the final two. All but 3 of the 39 included pieces are still in their original labeled boxes. The tiles largely remain in excellent like new condition with just minor surface wear seen on some with beautiful bright colours still seen. The exceptions to this include the examples of Dickie Moore and Cesare Maniago having small pieces of the cork backing missing while the Tom Williams tile has missing cork and a chip and lastly the Bob Nevin piece has chipping and surface wear. Also included is an original shipping box with “Andy Bathgate Rangers” written on the side while being addressed to “New York Rangers Hockey Club, Madison Square Garden” on the top.
